A Comprehensive Guide to Protecting Your Caravan This Winter
As the winter months close in and the temperature starts to drop it’s important to prepare your caravan holiday home (or lodge) against the colder elements.
Mould, damp, condensation and freezing temperatures (brought by that devilish fellow Jack Frost) can have dramatic unwanted effects on a holiday home – so we have some simple steps that you can take to ensure that it is protected during the autumn and winter seasons.
Drain Down & Drain Up
The "drain down" process is used in preparation of leaving your holiday home for an extended period of time over winter. This is the procedure of extracting water from your holiday home's pipes and systems to avoid damage. Our expert service involves the use of specialised equipment, including compressors that thoroughly expel every trace of water from your holiday home's pipes. Additionally, we introduce antifreeze into all water-holding reservoirs to safeguard against frost damage. The "drain up" process is the reverse of the drain down process. It encompasses reconnecting all joints both inside and outside your holiday home, as well as ensuring all appliances are properly operational and signed off in prepartion for your return to your holiday home.
Top tips on winterising a caravan or lodge:
1. Organise a drain down as soon as you can by contacting your park’s reception.
2. Give your caravan a thorough clean and open windows and doors to let air in.
3. Place removable furniture in the middle of the room including cushions and mattresses where possible.
4. Take bedding and pillows home or place them in a vacuum bag.
5. Remove any net and/or fabric curtains.
6. Empty and clean the fridge and freezer and leave doors open.
7. Pour antifreeze into plug holes.
8. Use moisture traps or place salt into bowls to absorb moisture and place around the holiday home.
9. Flush all toilets.
10. Ensure bathrooms are clutter free for easy access.
