Places to visitDevon knows I’m not miserable now – Top Devon Attractions
Devon offers so much choice: Majestic castles, stately homes and manors, art galleries to stimulate the mind and soul, plus museums for your history fix...
There’s farms and zoos for animal lovers, outstanding restaurants (diners with a penchant for celebrity chefs can choose from Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall, James & Chris Tanner, Gary Rhodes, Mitch Tonks and Anton Piotrowski), traditional pubs to relax in, and even vineyards and breweries for those who like a proper tipple.
And, of course, no visit to Devon would be complete without visiting a Tea Shop for a cream tea and a plate of jammy scones (we recommend "The Corn Dolly Teashop" in South Molton). So here’s a brief guide:
Amazing Devon Places to Visit
Castle Drogo
The youngest castle in England, (basically in Castle terms it's still got acne!) Castle Drogo. Enjoy its immaturity while you can, construction finished in 1930 meaning it's still pushing 88 years old!
Buckfast Abbey
If you're looking for serenity, Buckfast Abbey is a working monastery where a community of Benedictine monks live self-sufficiently, welcoming visitors from all around the world to share in the peace and tranquillity of the setting and lifestyle. They also brew fantastic beer. A must for those looking for a peaceful alternative and just maybe, enlightenment.
Powderham Castle and Exeter Cathedral
Situated just a short distance from the cathedral city of Exeter, Powderham Castle lies in a beautiful deer park on the banks of the River Exe. Engaged couples take note, you can also book your wedding venue here in what is sure to be a stunning occasion.
The Blue Plaque heritage trail in the English Riviera
Get your heritage on - the 49 blue plaques scattered across the English Riviera are a perfect guide to discovering its incredible heritage. Authors, poets, song-writers, scientists, and even industrialists (presuming you got dressed today, sewing machine magnate Isaac Singer is someone you may not have heard of, but should be grateful to) feature along the trail.
Kents Cavern
"We're going deeper undergound!" sang Jamiroquai on their 1998 hit of a similar name. Why not put Jay Kay's words into practice and step back into the stone age with a tour of these amazing prehistoric caves? There's 400 million year old rocks and spectacular stalagmites and stalactites on display so all your rock-gazing dreams should be fulfilled.
Pennywell Farm
Down on the farm! If you love traditional farmyard animals like lambs, pigs, horses, sheep and tortoises (wait, what?!) you're going to love a trip to Pennywell, easily one of the most fun days out in Devon. Wear your wellies.
Babbacombe Model Village
Like pretending that you're a giant? A giant who could crush towns and cities with a stomp of your foot? Then the Babbacombe Model Village is going to be absolutely perfect for you. But please don’t actually stomp the exhibits, the amazingly detailed model villages and cities are a miniature wonder to behold.
Ted Hughes Poetry Trail
OK ramblers, let's get rambling! And follow a trail specially created at Stover Country Park to celebrate the poetry of Ted Hughes, and his long-standing links with the Devon county. Fans of Sylvia Plath may prefer to curse his name while taking in the beautiful sites.
Miniature Pony Centre
They're ponies! But they're tiny! Trot along and feel your cuteness levels overload to horsey proportions with a visit to this fabulous farm.
Damien Hirst’s Verity
Love it or hate it (and it's sure to start a heated debate in the car) Damien Hirst's work of art is definitely worth a look. Just be grateful it's not a half-dissected animal.
